Gospel singer Mercy Masika has attracted mixed reactions after announcing her Becoming a Wife masterclass, with some Kenyans supporting the initiative while others question why marriage preparation programmes often focus on women rather than both partners. The programme has sparked a wider discussion about gender expectations, marital responsibilities and the role of religious mentorship in relationships.
Masika announced that Lady Bishop Kathy Kiuna would join the programme, highlighting the importance of guidance from experienced women in preparing for marriage. She expressed gratitude for the wisdom she had received from women who helped shape her understanding of marriage and Christian values.
Media personality Janet Mbugua questioned the focus on teaching women how to become better wives, arguing that marriage education should also address men's responsibilities. She raised concerns about violence against women, sexual abuse and child safety, while content creator Rachel Gitau also questioned why similar programmes are not organised for men. However, media personality Mashirima Kapombe defended Masika, arguing that women should be free to organise mentorship programmes without facing ridicule over their choices.
The debate has highlighted differing opinions on how couples should prepare for marriage and whether existing programmes place too much responsibility on women. While critics want greater emphasis on the role of husbands in building healthy relationships, supporters believe women should be allowed to seek guidance based on their personal and religious values. The masterclass is scheduled to run from November 21 to December 12, 2026.
