Jack Oyoo Sylvester, popularly known as Kaka JOS, is one of Kenya's most celebrated football commentators. He was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he lived for about 15 years before his family relocated to Kenya. Raised in a Kiswahili-speaking environment, he initially struggled with English in school but went on to become a master of Kiswahili sports broadcasting. After completing his O-Level education, Kaka JOS began teaching at Ndwiga Secondary School in Siaya. He taught Kiswahili, Geography, and Agriculture while supporting himself through various jobs. His passion for football remained strong, and he briefly played for Bonde FC in Homa Bay before recurring stomach ulcers ended his playing career. While teaching at Kuoyo Kochia Secondary School, he started sending football reports to the Voice of Kenya (VOK), which later became the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). His talent earned him a chance to cover the 1987 All-Africa Games in Nairobi, and in 1991 he officially joined KBC as a sports analyst and commentator. Kaka JOS became famous for his fast-paced, energetic, and highly creative commentary style, making listeners feel as though they were inside the stadium. He covered many major football tournaments, including the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, and later returned to KBC as a football analyst during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His legacy continues through the many young sports broadcasters he has mentored. Kaka JOS was more than a commentator—he painted football with words and turned radio into a stadium for millions of fans across Kenya.
