Detectives have arrested Dickson Yiaile Sitei over allegations that he spent Sh6.7 million that was mistakenly deposited into his bank account. Sitei was apprehended along Lantana Road in Westlands, Nairobi, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, following an investigation by the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit. The case dates back to November 18, 2025, when a company was processing 74 electronic payments. One of the transactions was a Sh72,000 rent payment owed to Sitei for the company’s shop in Suswa. However, a processing error resulted in an additional Sh6,744,354 intended for another company being transferred to his account. The company later sought to recover the money after discovering the mistake. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Sitei allegedly spent the funds instead of returning the excess amount, prompting an investigation into the transaction and the whereabouts of the money. After reviewing the investigation file, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that Sitei face charges of intentionally withholding an erroneously delivered payment under Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, and money laundering under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act. The charges relate to the alleged retention and use of money that was not intended for him. Sitei remained in custody on Monday as he underwent processing ahead of his expected court appearance. The DCI warned members of the public that money deposited into an account by mistake does not become the recipient’s property. Anyone who receives such funds is expected to facilitate their return, while deliberately withholding or spending them may lead to criminal prosecution.
