President William Ruto has said the country will stop exporting unprocessed gold as part of a wider plan to increase local mineral processing and improve returns for miners. Speaking during a media engagement at Kisumu State Lodge, Ruto said the government wants valuable minerals, including gold, coltan, rare earths and tantalum, processed locally rather than exported in raw form. He said the move would also help protect miners from exploitation by middlemen and brokers. The President also said the government was working with Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote on plans for a crude oil pipeline from Turkana to a proposed refinery in Lamu. He said the project formed part of broader efforts to develop the country's natural resources and create more value locally. Ruto further announced that Talanta Stadium would be renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium when it officially opens. He said the facility was nearing completion, with work on its lighting, water systems, audio equipment and playing surface still being finalised, while noting that the late former Prime Minister was also an Arsenal supporter. The President added that discussions were underway over renaming Kisumu International Airport after Raila Odinga. The proposed changes form part of efforts to honour the late opposition leader while the government continues to advance major infrastructure and natural resource projects.
