Mercy Kanini, a woman from Juja in Kiambu County, has made history after safely delivering five babies naturally at Thika Level Five Hospital on September 14, 2026. The rare delivery involved quintuplets, with Kanini giving birth to all five babies through normal vaginal delivery. The birth is reportedly among only five natural quintuplet deliveries documented in the country’s history. Kanini arrived at the hospital and delivered her first baby shortly afterwards. Doctors had initially prepared to perform an emergency Caesarean section, but she went on to safely deliver the remaining four babies naturally. The five new arrivals have increased Kanini’s total number of children to seven. Medical professionals generally consider pregnancies involving five babies highly complex and often recommend Caesarean delivery because of the risks involved for both the mother and the infants. Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi congratulated Kanini and praised the medical team at Thika Level Five Hospital for successfully managing the rare delivery. The birth has since attracted widespread attention because of its unusual nature and the safe outcome for the mother and her five newborns.
